Chapter 11
I think that it’s great
the way that Maplewood Richmond Heights School District has been able to build
an interconnect network within their community with university partners, mental
health partners, intraschool partners, experimental learning partners, and
corporate and community partners. My personal favorites among these are the
university partners, because I think it’s a great that college age students
have the chance to work with younger middle and high school age students, and
it also gives the younger students the chance to get a view of college life. I
also liked experiential learning partners because it gives students real world
experiences in an environment that cannot be replicated in the regular
classroom. While it might not be the most reasonable position I don’t personally
care for corporate partners, because I am an advocate of not having sources
outside the education system have any influence in school curriculum.
Chapter 12
I think that this chapter
does a good job at showing the need for balance between using technology in the
classroom and break away from using it at all, and how the schools digital
leaders need to be able to demonstrate the appropriate amount. It warns of the
trap of using technology to a dangerous degree, where the digital leader is so
wrapped up in the technology they completely ignore the human aspect of it.
I also enjoyed hearing about the partnerships in chapter 11. I think that college students should come back to their alma mater and speak to the students about their experiences in college. Some kids today have a completely different understanding about college than the real college experience. Every week our administration finds local businesses or different types of speakers to come and talk to our students about their experiences and what they do every day. Our school is trying to offer different opportunities for our students and help them find something that they want to do once they leave high school. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI also felt that Chapter 12 did a nice job stressing the importance of finding a balance of technology usage in the classroom, and in life in general. I have to stop myself frequently and "log off" because I feel I personally get too much screen time on my device and don't want to become overly dependent. I also don't like the panicked feeling I get if I forget my phone at home and go all day without it at school. I know I've left it behind, but in a way I feel lost and disconnected. I'm trying to de-value my device, but it is hard because so much of "me" is stored in it. This course has given us all pause for reflection with our technologies and I've enjoyed it very much. Nice observations.
ReplyDeleteBrandon,
ReplyDeleteSo many things are about balance or not expecting a tool like technology being the only tool you use. Hope your semester (very busy semester) has been a good one as the end is within site. Have a great up-coming holiday break as you look forward to continuing your education. Thanks for sharing your points of view with us this semester. Best wishes!
Great post, I believe it takes good leaders and a strong support system within the school to achieve and maintain effective community partners. Working with the community and parents should not be left to a few. I feel the university partners are an excellent opportunity, but I also think existing educators within a school should be highlighted to show and describe their educational path/choices. Let the students know and see what you have done to get where you are :)
