EDUC 6812 Intro Post

Hello all! My name is Amanda Smith and I live in Mannington, WV. I am currently an adjunct in the Math department here at Fairmont State. This is my fourth semester teaching, and to date, I’ve taught College Algebra, College Algebra Support, Tech Math Lab, and Fundamental Concepts of Mathematics. This semester I am teaching MATH 1007 & MATH 1107, Fundamental Concepts of Math lecture and support.

I graduated from FSU in May 2009 with a BS in Mathematics/minor in Office Administration. Since then, my career path has been all over the place! I worked at a car auction, I was the transfer specialist in Enrollment Services here at FSU, I was a substitute teacher in Marion County for a year, and had a very brief stint at a bank. In July of 2014 I was asked to become an adjunct for FSU and I have finally found my calling! I enjoy teaching math, working with adults, the environment of higher education, and the freedom and ability to make each class my own.

I’m pursing a Master’s in Education with a concentration in Digital Media, New Literacies and Learning. This is my second semester in the grad program, so I expect to finish my degree in the spring of 2017. I have only taken two classes so far (summer 2015: EDUC 6301 & EDUC 6809). With my degree, I plan to become a full-time Mathematics professor (perhaps at FSU).

When I'm not too busy with teaching and taking classes, I enjoy almost anything outside. I have a new found love of kayaking, and spent several weekends this summer in the water somewhere in WV. Hiking, biking, swimming, and camping also take up a majority of my free time in the summer. I have one cat and one dog, who are both rescues and best of friends.

  1. Welcome, Amanda! I'm very familiar with Mannington, since I grew up in Rivesville and lived in Fairview for 21 years. I hope you fulfill your dream of teaching full time at FSU. Also, I love kayaking too! Since moving south, I've found ocean and marsh kayaking very exciting! I'll post a picture of my first speckled sea trout caught from my kayak.

  2. Hello Amanda! I took the same courses this summer and will be graduating in the Spring of 2017 as well. I just started kayaking this summer too and love it. My husband got a kayak for our anniversary and he loves it as well.

  3. Amanda,
As I tell my students on a regular basis ..."it's just as important to figure what you don't want to do as it is what you do... try it, give it a chance, then mark it off the list... one less thing, right?" It sounds like you have found something you really want to explore more as you continue your education. As for the love of your new found recreational vehicle (which most seem to share), my wife and I too, find them to be quite enjoyable in both the river and the ocean. Altough I must confess that we usually go tandem, which is a word that directly translates into... more work for the person in the back (me). I'm looking forward to this class and reading your comments and views.

  4. Kayaking is awesome! I borrowed 2 kayaks this summer from a friend and my younger brother and I took them out on the river a few times. I also enjoy the outdoors. I have picked up running, and am training for the Morgantown half marathon next month. It is quite intense, but I'm loving it! I too would enjoy being a professor, and one day may join you in higher education, but for now I teach middle school and am content with that. Good luck to you this year, can't wait to hash out some good discussions on here. Keep paddling!

  5. Hello Amanda, exciting to have another class with you. I wish you luck with getting that position as a professor and I'm sure this M.Ed. program will give you an edge on most of the FSU professors. I see Beth Thompson all the time in HHH; I'm sure you spend most of your day in ET. Outdoor activities are the best, but it's too bad fall/winter is going to narrow down the water activities. Good luck with class this semester!
